The European Union has launched a new EUR 5.5 million project, EU4Employment in Bosnia and Herzegovina – Harnessing the Green and Digital Transitions, aimed at improving employment opportunities for women, youth, the long-term unemployed, and vulnerable groups. The project was officially presented in Sarajevo, marking a significant step towards addressing labour market challenges in the country.
Boosting Employment and Skills Development
The initiative will focus on upskilling and reskilling at least 1,800 individuals, while directly facilitating the employment of at least 600 people through employer-supported hiring, self-employment, and job formalisation. To achieve these goals, the project will implement 20 active labour market programmes, primarily targeting green and digitally intensive sectors.
Antonella Di Sandri, Head of Operations Section II at the EU Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina, emphasised the EU’s long-standing commitment to employment sector reforms in the country.
ILO-Led Implementation and Expert Discussions
The project is implemented by the International Labour Organization (ILO), which hosted a panel discussion during the launch event on the theme: “How to effectively support those furthest from the labour market to seize the opportunities generated by the green and digital economy.” Experts discussed ways to improve access to employment support funds within these sectors.
Katarina Crnjanski-Vlajčić, Technical Specialist for Social Inclusion and Public Employment Services at the ILO, highlighted the organisation’s role in preparing Bosnia and Herzegovina’s workforce for the future.
A Step Towards Sustainable Job Creation
By providing grant funding and technical assistance, the project will implement carefully designed employment measures to enhance skills, improve employability, and create sustainable job opportunities in emerging sectors. It reflects the EU’s broader efforts to strengthen economic resilience and modernise the labour market in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
