Story Grants for Reporting on Biodiversity Issues in the Western Balkans

The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is offering story grants to support journalists in the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo*, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia) to produce in-depth stories on biodiversity, including the value of nature, threats to ecosystems, conservation efforts and solutions. Journalists working in any medium (print, online, radio or TV) can apply.

Selected journalists will receive funding (around €1,200 per story) to cover reporting costs such as travel, interviews, equipment and related expenses, as well as editorial mentorship to help shape and publish impactful work by August 2026. The grants aim to strengthen environmental journalism, raise public awareness of biodiversity challenges, and contribute to more informed public and policy debates in the region.

Applications must include a detailed story proposal, budget, samples of previous work and an editorial support letter confirming publication. Freelancers, staff journalists and media practitioners with relevant experience are eligible, and transparency about any use of generative AI tools is required.

Deadline: 19 February 2026
Grant size: up to approx. €1,200 per story
Publication timeline: stories published by 30 August 2026
