In recent developments, the Ministry of Economy of Kosovo* launched a public call, funded by the European Union, aimed at supporting households in investing in energy-efficient heating systems. This initiative aligns with Kosovo’s broader efforts to advance its bioeconomy by fostering sustainable energy practices and reducing dependency on non-renewable energy sources.
The call for energy-efficient heating systems, which includes devices such as biomass boilers and efficient air conditioners, directly impacts the key sectors of the bioeconomy. Biomass, a renewable resource sourced from agriculture and forestry residues, is crucial for bioenergy production. By promoting biomass-based heating systems like pellet and wood stoves, Kosovo is fostering the sustainable use of its natural resources, thus contributing to the development of its bioeconomy.
Prime Minister Kurti highlighted that the previous year’s program saved 14 GWh of energy and cut state expenses on imported electricity by 1.8 million euros, showcasing how energy efficiency not only benefits the environment but also strengthens the economy. Furthermore, by supporting investments in renewable energy sources and efficient technologies, Kosovo is reinforcing its agricultural and forestry sectors, vital components of the bioeconomy.
Eva Palatova, representing the EU, stressed the importance of this initiative in the context of the EU’s broader support for energy security in the Western Balkans. The EU allocated 75 million euros for energy-related projects in Kosovo, helping families and businesses adapt to sustainable energy practices and increase their energy efficiency.
This initiative is part of the EU’s commitment to building resilience against the ongoing energy crisis, largely exacerbated by the war in Ukraine. For Kosovo, this collaboration provides not only financial support but also a pathway toward a more sustainable, bio-based economy that prioritizes renewable resources, thus reducing the country’s reliance on imported energy.
Encouraging Broader Participation
The initiative has a special focus on vulnerable groups, encouraging applications from all ethnic communities in Kosovo. Citizens are encouraged to apply through the e-Kosova platform, with the application deadline set for October 11, 2024, or until the allocated budget is exhausted. By offering financial support for energy-efficient devices, Kosovo is creating opportunities for households to reduce their energy costs while contributing to the country’s green transition.
This approach aligns with the global shift toward renewable resources and sustainable development, ensuring that bioeconomy principles are embedded in the nation’s energy sector.
