The Central European Initiative (CEI) Fund announces 12 new grants in its CEI Know-how Exchange Programme (KEP)

The Office for the CEI Fund at the EBRD has announced the results of its 2024 Call for Proposals under the CEI Know-how Exchange Programme (KEP) in January 2025.

The initiative provides financial support to projects that align with the goals of the Central European Initiative, focusing on fostering regional cooperation, capacity-building, and sustainable development across Central and Southeastern Europe.

Out of 57 applications, 12 standout projects have been selected to receive an overall financial backing of 431,202.12 EUR provided by Italy through the CEI Fund at the EBRD.

The winning projects – both bilateral and regional – span multiple sectors including institutional development and good governance, energy and environmental protection, media freedom, health and sustainable tourism. They bring together a wide network of partners and stakeholders such as national/local institutions, government agencies, foundations, and universities, each contributing specific expertise to the project.

By fostering collaboration among diverse actors, the initiatives strengthen cross-border partnerships, facilitate the exchange of knowledge, and contribute to the regional development and EU integration efforts of the beneficiary countries, i.e. Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Moldova, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Ukraine.

Project involving partners from the Western Balkans deal for example with topics such as:

  • EU Natural gas markets: fundamentals, regulatory frameworks and challenges for market integration and decarbonisation (involving energy authorities from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Montenegro)
  • CEI support to strengthening the Parliaments of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia and Ukraine, in the context of the EU Accession
  • Technical assistance for the creation of a National Promotional Institution (NPI) in Albania
  • Capacity enhancing of the Albanian marine pollution preparedness and response system
  • Enhancing Sustainable Tourism Development in Montenegro
  • CEI support to Technology Transfer for Hospitals in Albania and North Macedonia (ALBAU-TT-CRO)
  • Urban Nexus: Empowering Local Governance in the Western Balkan (UrbaNEX – WB)
  • Civil Society for Good Governance and Anti-Corruption in Southeast Europe: CEI Support to Capacity Building for Evidence-Based Advocacy, Policy Impact and Citizen Engagement
