The 13th Days of Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS), the largest annual scientific and educational conference in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was held in Sarajevo, 23rd-26th June 2022, and brought together established and emerging scholars from around the world in an effort to exchange ideas and create new initiatives. POLICY ANSWERS partner University of Sarajevo was one of the partners to BHAAAS in the organization of the event. The conference program consisted of 33 symposia organized in five sections (medical sciences, technical and natural sciences, sustainability, social sciences, humanities and arts). Apart from this, the presentations were held by prominent experts and students in a variety of special sessions, round table discussions, and workshops (both for experts/researchers and students).
Many arts and culture events accompanied the scientific program. The format of the meeting encouraged interactions between participants and promoted networking opportunities.
A press conference, held by the Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of BiH, officially marked the beginning of the 13th Day of BHAAAS.
BHAAAS Programme in Sustainable Development created a platform for representatives of the international community, local government, various field experts and the civic society to engage together in the form of a plenary session, a round-table discussion and four specialized symposia with indexed scientific research proceedings hosting authors and guest experts in humanities and social sciences, architecture, urban planning, civil engineering and related fields. The aim was to bring together various stakeholders contributing to a more sustainable built environment and socio-economic development. The BHAAAS sustainable development programme was endorsed by multiple international professional organizations, such as UNDP, ISOCARP, ACE and CIGRE.
The first day of the scientific conference stood in the sign of special events on sustainable development, the topic of brain drain and a special panel for students. Discussion was focused on the SDGs Framework in BiH that was adopted at all levels of government in the country.
Within the “Sustainable Urban Development: Designing Smart, Inclusive and Resilient Cities” symposium the NEB Forum BiH held a roundtable on the “New European Bauhaus and Us: Context, Purpose, Opportunities.” The Round Table presented the work of the New European Bauhaus Forum BiH, which is an official partner in the community of participants in the EU initiative launched under the slogan: Beautiful, Sustainable, Together. This new cross-sectoral network opens a platform for dialogue and collaboration among the creative professionals interested in the synergies in built environment, culture and society in light of the principles of just transition within the sustainable development goals.
The second day focused on medical symposia that bring together some of the biggest names from the region and the world in medical sciences, as well as a symposium on sustainable urban development. Further a round table of the BH academic diaspora on the topic of advancing the development of science and technology in BH took place, discussing the private health sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the presentation of the project of the first private general hospital in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The BH academic diaspora presented ideas and possible solutions for improving the development of science and technology in the country. Students had the opportunity to learn about business opportunities and presentation to employers.
The Ceremonial Opening of the 13th Days of BHAAAS in the City Hall in Sarajevo was accompanied by great atmosphere and a small concert by maestro Sinan Alimanović and composer Svjetlana Bukvich.
The third day of the biggest scientific event in BiH was marked by as many as 10 symposia from medical sciences: Cardiovascular medicine, neurology, gynecology and obstetrics, ophthalmology, orthopedics and traumatology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, anesthesiology, family medicine and pediatrics – these are all medical disciplines incl. their latest research, which the participants of the symposium had the opportunity to learn about. The last day was reserved for medical symposia, workshops and meetings of students and young people.
In summary, the 13th BHAAS Days not only attracted the attention of Bosnian public and directed it towards the importance of investing in science, culture and arts, but also enabled exchange of ideas and creation of new initiatives, new projects and collaborations. The event provided a physical and virtual space for the meeting of ideas, whereby continuing to build and strengthen the community of researchers and artists with diverse backgrounds and experiences, and it further provided Bosnian students with much needed opportunity to broaden their perspective, work on personal and academic development in a new way, and meet experts in the field who can be inspiration, mentor or future professional contact
