EU Strengthens Social Care in Albania

The European Union continues to play a pivotal role in enhancing social care services in Albania, particularly through the EU4SocialCare programme. Funded by the EU and implemented by UNICEF and World Vision Albania, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, this three-year initiative is dedicated to expanding and improving community-based and specialised social services for children and families experiencing social difficulties.

A recent ceremony marked the formal launch of partnerships between 14 municipalities and 13 civil society organisations (CSOs), which will collectively receive €1.47 million in funding to strengthen local social care services.

Through these new partnerships, the EU4SocialCare programme will support initiatives such as mobile units for marginalised groups, multifunctional centres, and specialised services for children with disabilities, survivors of violence, minority communities, and unemployed youth. These projects demonstrate how compassion and innovation at the local level can drive meaningful change, aligning closely with the EU’s broader goal of fostering an inclusive and equitable society.

In addition to EU-backed initiatives, the Albanian Government, through the State Social Services, has signed cooperation agreements with 11 municipalities, which will receive financial support in 2025 via the Social Fund. This fund strengthens existing social services and supports the development of new ones to meet diverse family and community needs.
