The European Commission has officially launched BE READY, a new European Partnership for pandemic preparedness, aimed at boosting Europe’s ability to anticipate, prevent and respond rapidly to future epidemics and pandemics. The initiative is part of the Horizon Europe research and innovation framework programme and will advance collaborative research on emerging and re-emerging pathogens, diagnostics, treatments and vaccines.
Under BE READY, national and European research priorities will be aligned through a jointly developed strategic research and innovation agenda, and joint transnational calls will support coordinated funding for multinational research projects. This approach is designed to strengthen cross-border collaboration and accelerate the development of new medical countermeasures when health crises arise.
European Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation Ekaterina Zaharieva highlighted the importance of this partnership, noting that €120 million from the Horizon Europe budget has been allocated to support BE READY, reinforcing Europe’s scientific excellence and innovation leadership in health research.
Coordinated by the French ANRS-MIE and bringing together 81 organisations from 27 countries, BE READY builds on years of European investment in pandemic research and marks a major step towards a more resilient and prepared European research ecosystem.
