NanoKos, a Model of International Cooperation Strengthening Kosovo’s Scientific Capacities

Funded by the European Union and implemented by the University of Prishtina in partnership with the University of Milan, the University of Parma, and King’s College London, the NanoKos project has played a key role in advancing Kosovo*’s scientific capacity in nanotechnology, nanomedicine, and environmental health. The project aimed to strengthen research infrastructure, build human capacities through international mobility, and establish sustainable cooperation between Kosovo and leading European research institutions.

One of the project’s most significant achievements is the establishment of the Laboratory of Applied Medicine and Nanobiological Research, the first of its kind in Kosovo. Equipped with advanced technology for nanoparticle characterization and biomedical research, the laboratory focuses on nanomedicine to improve public health through prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as environmental research addressing major health risks such as air pollution and energy sustainability.

Through EU-supported mobility programs, 34 young researchers and 40 academic and administrative staff from the University of Prishtina gained valuable experience at partner institutions. These exchanges led to concrete career advancements, including doctoral and postdoctoral opportunities at prestigious European research centers, demonstrating the project’s long-term impact on developing a new generation of Kosovar scientists.

NanoKos has also strengthened institutional ties by facilitating knowledge transfer, introducing advanced research methodologies, and enabling Kosovo’s public universities to participate in competitive research calls in nanomedicine for the first time. In parallel, the project supported public awareness activities on nanoparticle-related air pollution, engaged students and the wider public, and contributed to international conferences and scientific publications.

After more than two years of implementation, NanoKos has left a lasting legacy through modern research infrastructure, European-standard training, and strong international partnerships, proving that targeted investment and cooperation can significantly elevate scientific research in Kosovo.
