The final meeting of the project Support for the Restoration and Conservation of the Oldest European Tree Species – Pančić Spruce (Picea omorika) took place on 13 September 2024 at the Faculty of Forestry, University of Banja Luka. The project focused on supporting the natural regeneration of the endangered Pančić spruce in situ, establishing guidelines for its long-term conservation, and raising public awareness about its ecological importance.
Over three years, research was conducted in Republika Srpska and Serbia, gathering extensive data on the species’ populations under varying ecological conditions, including areas affected by fires. Findings were summarised in the publication Guidelines for the Conservation of Pančić’s Spruce in Situ. The initiative was supported by multiple regional partners and funded by the Swiss Franklin Foundation.
An exhibition, Pančić’s Spruce – a Story of Life, accompanied the event and is open to visitors until 20 September 2024.
