POLICY ANSWERS Fellowship: Open Day at the University of Tirana’s Faculty of Natural Sciences

As part of her ongoing POLICY ANSWERS Fellowship at the National Agency for Scientific Research and Innovation (NASRI) in Albania, Fiorda Llukmani recently took part in the Open Day event at the Faculty of Natural Sciences (FSHN) at the University of Tirana, held on 23 April 2025.

The Open Day offered an excellent opportunity for high school graduates to explore the wide range of academic programmes available at FSHN, including both traditional and newly introduced fields of study. Participants had the chance to discover the Faculty’s modern learning spaces and visit state-of-the-art laboratories, where cutting-edge research and scientific training take place.

Fiorda toured several of the university’s laboratories, gaining a deeper understanding of the research infrastructure supporting students and academic staff. Her visit highlighted the Faculty’s efforts to modernise its facilities and foster an environment that encourages scientific innovation and research excellence.

One of the key aims of the Open Day was to inspire more young people in Albania to pursue studies in scientific disciplines. In recent years, the number of students enrolling in subjects such as mathematics, chemistry, and physics has been steadily declining. The event sought to reverse this trend by showcasing the opportunities, resources, and future career paths that a science education can offer.

Fiorda’s participation aligns with the wider goals of the POLICY ANSWERS Fellowship, which supports educational promotion, stronger institutional ties, and greater participation of Albanian students and researchers in European research and innovation programmes.

By engaging with students and faculty members, Fiorda helped highlight the importance of choosing scientific studies and the role of research and innovation in Albania’s development and integration with European initiatives.

The Open Day at FSHN successfully demonstrated the Faculty’s commitment to nurturing future generations of scientists and innovators, supporting both national growth and broader European collaboration.
