SpinIT Project Boosts Innovation and Smart Specialisation Across the Danube Region

The Zenica Development Agency (ZEDA) and the Foundation for Innovation, Technology and Transfer of Knowledge Tuzla (FITT) from Bosnia and Herzegovina are partners in a European project titled “Boosting Smart Specialisation and Encouraging Spin-offs in IT across the Danube Region.”

The SpinIT project addresses significant territorial disparities within the Danube Region, particularly in innovation capacity, technological development, and ecosystem isolation in Eastern and Southeastern Europe. Its impact is centred on three key areas: supporting innovation intermediaries, engaging a broad range of stakeholders, and strengthening ecosystem linkages in alignment with Smart Specialisation Strategies (S3) through targeted communication and event organisation.

The SpinIT project seeks to bridge innovation gaps in the Danube Region by connecting less developed hubs with more advanced ones, fostering interconnectivity, and building resilient innovation networks. It emphasises collaboration between academia, businesses, policymakers, and SMEs with start-ups, promoting engagement through networking, peer learning, and local public-private partnerships. Its core outputs focus on cross-border cooperation among 30 organisations, the development of Local Action Plans, and pilot projects in smart specialisation and IT. These pilots are validated and scaled across 10 locations in 8 countries to support digitalisation and sustainable development.

With a unique focus on three clusters—IT, Industry 4.0, and IT cross-sector collaboration—SpinIT targets underdeveloped regions with high-impact potential. The project builds on previous initiatives (e.g., DIH4CPS, DANUBEPeerChains) and collaborates with ongoing efforts to maximise knowledge sharing through networks like ARISE, while avoiding duplication. By prioritising financial resilience, institutional support, and political engagement, SpinIT aims to ensure the durability and transferability of its outcomes, creating a lasting impact on regional innovation ecosystems.
