Montenegro’s Minister of Sports and Youth, Dragoslav Šćekić, met with UNDP Resident Representative Ekaterina Paniklova to outline concrete steps for supporting young people in facing challenges related to digital transformation, employment, and mental health. Both expressed their commitment to creating sustainable opportunities for youth development in Montenegro.
The meeting highlighted the complex transitional processes young people in Montenegro face. Minister Šćekić noted that, alongside employment and quality leisure activities, young individuals must adapt to a digital society and address mental health issues. Research shows over 20% of youth experience low motivation, while 93.9% rely on social media as their primary source of information.
Employment opportunities were also a key topic, with findings indicating a preference among young people for public sector jobs, particularly among women and NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) groups. Additionally, half of Montenegro’s youth feel their rights and freedoms are insufficiently protected.
The Ministry and UNDP also stressed long-term strategies to support young people during their transition to adulthood. The European Commission’s 2024 Report underscored the importance of the Youth Strategy 2023-2027 and revising the Youth Law to further strengthen resources dedicated to young people.
