The South Eastern Europe (SEE) Directors Forum Held in Brighton

The South Eastern Europe (SEE) Directors Forum took place on 9 June in Brighton. Held alongside TNC25, the forum provided a space for focused discussion and strategic exchange among regional NRENs. Despite the absence of several representatives, including Chair Anastas Mishev and colleagues from GRNET, KREN, ULAKBIM, RoEduNet, and the University of Malta, the meeting remained constructive and forward-looking.

Presentations included Goran Škvarč (CARNET) showcasing Certiffy, a new tool to detect fake webshops, along with updates from the CSPAC committee and the NRENs4Education initiative – a joint effort with CSC, Jisc, Sikt, SURF, and GÉANT to support a federated European Education Area.

Edit Herczog (GÉANT EU Liaison Office) highlighted the EU’s continued commitment to the Western Balkans, noting a shift from project-based to policy-driven funding. She emphasised the importance of strategic national planning to access mechanisms such as IPA III, Horizon Europe, Digital Europe, and the Reform and Growth Facility.

Mira Stanic (GÉANT Partner Relations) presented the GÉANT Value for Money case, supporting NRENs in engaging with funders. Feedback showed strong appreciation for GÉANT’s advanced services, secure connectivity, and financial sustainability. Future discussions will likely focus on innovation and cross-border collaboration.
