Despite progress in decarbonisation, Western Balkan region still rely on fossil fuels for up to 60% of their energy. Aligning legislation with the EU, these nations face delays in implementation and require increased support. The Just Transition Programme could offer €2 billion in aid to the region, with Montenegro potentially receiving €50 million.
At the “Green Horizons of Economic Development” conference, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce in Montenegro, two panels addressed key topics: decarbonisation strategies for businesses and the private sector’s role in advancing green initiatives. Key figures emphasised the need for alignment with EU frameworks, enhancing renewable energy, and developing energy efficiency.
Private sector leaders highlighted their efforts, including energy transformation through wind and solar projects, and circular economy practices. Additionally, regional experts urged closer collaboration with small enterprises to attract investment and drive sustainability, underscoring the role of green projects in the EU accession process.
