Adriatic-Ionian Cooperation programme

Description of the programme / policy

The Adriatic-Ionian Cooperation programme aims to promote economic and social cohesion in the Adriatic-Ionian region by supporting sustainable growth, job creation, and environmental protection. The programme focuses on four thematic areas: innovation and competitiveness, natural and cultural resources, transport and mobility, and governance and institutional capacity.

Main objective of the programme/policy

The Adriatic-Ionian Cooperation programme acts as a policy driver and governance innovator aiming to foster European integration among partner states, aiming to develop a regional innovation system for the Adriatic-Ionian area, enhance the capacity to transnationally address environmental vulnerability, fragmentation, and safeguarding of ecosystem services in the Adriatic and Ionian area, increase the capacity for integrated transport and mobility services and multimodality in the Adriatic-Ionian area, and enhance the institutional capacity of public administrations and key stakeholders, and assist the progress of implementation of joint priorities within the framework of the EUSAIR.

Specific objective of the programme/policy

  1. Supporting a smarter Adriatic-Ionian region:
  • Development and enhancement of research and innovation capacities and adoption of advanced technologies;
  • Development of skills for smart specialisation, industrial transition, and entrepreneurship;
  1. Supporting a greener and climate resilient Adriatic-Ionian region:
  • Promotion of climate change adaptation and disaster risk prevention, considering ecosystem-based approaches;
  • Encouragement of the transition to a circular economy and efficient resource utilisation;
  • Enhancement of protection and preservation of nature, biodiversity, and green infrastructure, including urban areas, and reduction of all forms of pollution;
  • Promotion of sustainable multimodal urban mobility as part of the transition to a net-zero carbon economy;
  1. Supporting a carbon neutral and better connected Adriatic and Ionian region:
  • Development and enhancement of sustainable, climate-resilient, smart, and intermodal national, regional, and local mobility, including improved access to TEN-T and cross-border mobility;
  1. Support for the governance of the Adriatic-Ionian region
