Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Science

In October 2025, the European Commission presented the European Strategy for AI in Science, designed to maximise the benefits of this transformative technology and support scientists in the responsible adoption of AI within their research. This coordinated and strategic approach reinforces Europe’s leadership in scientific excellence and innovation, strengthening its competitiveness on the global stage.

At the heart of the strategy lies RAISE, the Resource for AI Science in Europe, a virtual institute that brings together Europe’s AI resources for science, from talent and funding to computing power and data.

The pilot phase of RAISE was launched at the AI in Science Summit in Copenhagen in November 2025.

More information on the AI in Science Strategy and RAISE can be found on the European Commission’s website.

Europe’s Approach to AI in Science

Europe’s approach to integrating AI into science aligns with the broader European AI framework, including the AI Continent Action Plan and the Apply AI Strategy. It builds upon the advice of the Scientific Advice Mechanism, which provides guidance on how to integrate AI responsibly into scientific research.

Working closely with the European scientific community, the objective is to harness the immense potential of AI while addressing societal and ethical concerns.

The aims are to:

  • Accelerate the adoption of AI by scientists through improved access to data, computational power, and skilled talent.
  • Monitor and guide the impact of AI on the scientific process, addressing science-specific challenges such as maintaining scientific integrity and methodological rigour.
