An AI Gigafactory is a large-scale European computing facility designed to train and develop advanced artificial intelligence models using vast amounts of computational power. Established under the EU’s InvestAI initiative, these centres are equipped with next-generation AI accelerators and high-performance computing infrastructure on a scale comparable to the systems used by leading global AI laboratories. Their purpose is to provide Europe with sovereign access to cutting-edge compute capacity, enabling the development of foundation models, scientific AI tools and other computationally intensive applications. By concentrating immense resources in a small number of strategic locations, AI Gigafactories form the backbone of Europe’s emerging AI infrastructure and complement the wider AI Factory Network, which provides distributed access, training and support to researchers, SMEs and public institutions across the continent.
