The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Banja Luka officially commenced its coordination of the “Enhancing Scientific Capacities for Energy Poverty (ENPOWER)” project on 1 October 2024, during a meeting held at the University’s Rectorate. The project, funded by the Horizon Europe programme with a total budget of €1,498,443.34, aims to strengthen the University’s scientific capabilities and contribute to tackling energy poverty in Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H).
The opening session featured speeches from the project coordinator, Prof. Petar Gvero, PhD, Vice-Rector for Scientific Research and Development Prof. Aleksandar Ostojić, PhD, and Assistant Minister of Scientific and Technological Development of the Republic of Srpska, Zoran Bjelajac. The hybrid meeting brought together project participants, faculty members, and distinguished guests to outline the project’s initial activities and establish the next steps for its implementation over the coming six months.
Collaborative Network and Project Goals
The ENPOWER project represents a collaboration between the University of Banja Luka and esteemed international partners, including the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium), Tilburg University (Netherlands), University of Macerata (Italy), and the Irish company Sustainable Innovation Technology Services Limited. Over the next 36 months, the project will enhance the University’s scientific reputation, expand its networking opportunities, and strengthen its social impact.
The initiative focuses on six key work packages designed to advance excellence in research and innovation in both technical and social disciplines. It aims to apply scientific expertise to address challenges related to energy poverty in B&H while also fostering international collaboration and integration into the European research area.
Research and Development Highlights
The project seeks to develop research in areas such as:
- Energy consumption and efficiency in buildings
- Smart energy systems and artificial intelligence
- Socioeconomic aspects of energy poverty, including justice, transition, and governance
A significant milestone of ENPOWER will be the establishment of the Building Advisory System Living Lab (BAS-Living Lab) at the University of Banja Luka. This interdisciplinary facility will enable collaboration between academia, industry, public agencies, and civil society to create innovative solutions for energy-related challenges.
Additionally, the project will contribute to the professional development of both experienced and early-career researchers at the University. It aims to create a sustainable framework for research, innovation, mobility, and international networking, driving forward smart specialisation, green transition, and economic growth in B&H.
The ENPOWER project marks an important step in positioning the University of Banja Luka as a leader in energy research, with potential to make a lasting impact on societal and environmental challenges in the region.
