The use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in the European Union (including results for some Western Balkans)

The report “The use of artificial intelligence technologies in the European Union – Key results – 2026 edition” by Eurostat provides a statistical overview of AI adoption in the EU, but includes also available results from enlargement countries.

The report focuses on AI usage among businesses and citizens, offering valuable insights into how these technologies are reshaping the EU’s economy and society. Key areas of focus include AI applications in various sectors and the impact on business operations and daily life. This report is part of Eurostat’s effort to monitor and analyse digital transformations within the EU.

In terms of enterprises using AI technologies, data is available from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia.

The report also provides more information about these companies in terms of what they are using AI for – and also in the Western Balkans, some are using AI for research and development. On page 29 and 30 of the report, data on the “type of purpose” is available (see below).

Last but not least, also data about citizen’s use of AI is included. This information is available for Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Serbia (see screenshot of the respective figure below).
