The European Commission has announced a significant expansion of Europe’s AI infrastructure, bringing the total number of AI Factories to 19 across 16 Member States. While the new AI Factories will be established in the Czech Republic, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain, and Poland, the initiative is set to have a wider impact, including for neighbouring countries such as North Macedonia and Serbia.
The AI Factories provide startups, SMEs, and industry with direct access to AI-optimised supercomputers, technical expertise, and tailored support to develop and deploy advanced AI solutions. By linking regional AI communities to Europe’s high-performance computing capacity, the network aims to accelerate the adoption of AI technologies across multiple sectors.
Supported by over €500 million in joint investment from the EU and Member States, this third wave of AI Factories forms part of the broader €2.6 billion AI Factories and Antennas initiative, reinforcing Europe’s ambition to become a global AI Continent.
For North Macedonia and Serbia, AI Factory Antennas, soon to be announced, will provide secure remote access to the network, enabling local researchers, businesses, and public institutions to leverage world-class AI capabilities without the need to host large infrastructure domestically.
This rollout aligns with the EU’s AI Continent Action Plan and complements investments in AI Gigafactories, large-scale facilities dedicated to developing and training advanced AI models. The initiative also supports the Apply AI Strategy, aiming to accelerate AI adoption across Europe’s economy and public sector, creating opportunities for innovation and competitiveness in the Western Balkans.
