The European Commission has published a new success story on MONUSEN, an EU-funded Horizon Europe project that strengthened Montenegro’s research capacity in underwater sensor networks, underwater communication and marine robotics.
MONUSEN connected the University of Montenegro with experienced partners from Croatia, Italy and the United Kingdom. Through staff exchanges, expert visits, hands-on training sessions and joint experiments, the project supported knowledge transfer and helped expand Montenegro’s role in a specialised field with applications in oceanographic data collection, archaeology, pollution monitoring and maritime security.
The project also delivered concrete research outputs, including scientific publications, early-stage prototypes and national-level patent applications. According to the European Commission story, MONUSEN has already led to follow-up collaborations and new research initiatives with European partners.
The story is a strong example of how EU-funded research and innovation cooperation can build lasting capacity, support international partnerships and contribute to the integration of enlargement economies into European research networks.
