Western Balkans success in recently approved 80 new COST Actions

The latest COST Open Call (OC-2025-1) has recognised seven Actions led by researchers from the Western Balkans, highlighting the region’s growing contribution to European research networks. Among the 80 approved Actions, North Macedonia secured three projects in the role of main proposer, Serbia two, and Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro one each.

In North Macedonia, the approved Actions address circular construction, futures literacy, and sustainability in accounting education. These include CA25114 Towards Circular Future: Innovation of Circular Facades, CA25141 Futures Literacy for Anticipatory Societies – Strengthening Foresight Systems Across Europe (FLARE), and CA25168 Embedding Sustainability Reporting and Assurance in Accounting and Auditing Education Across Europe.

Serbian led projects focus on health and environmental concerns, with CA25112 Network for comprehensive characterization and management of MIGRAINE subTypes: multidisciplinary AI-driven approach and CA25174 Reducing Endocrine Disruptor Exposure for a Healthy Start for Future Generations.

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s initiative, CA25130, explores next-generation mathematics and computer science education utilising large language models.

Montenegro contributes with CA25116 Terra Atomica: Exploring the Afterlives of Nuclear Landscapes in Europe, which investigates the legacy of nuclear landscapes on the continent.

Beyond these leading roles, researchers and institutions from the Western Balkans also participate extensively as co-proposers in multiple COST Actions across the continent. They contribute to networks addressing environmental DNA policy integration, sustainable aerogels, responsible AI in education, inclusive nutrition systems, and European agri-food resilience. This involvement reflects a broad commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, and the fact that Western Balkan experts are well engaged with cutting-edge research across health sciences, engineering, environmental studies and digital innovation.

The region’s participation ensures representation in shaping Europe-wide knowledge exchange, capacity building, and policy development, while also providing opportunities for early-career researchers and institutions from Inclusiveness Target Countries to integrate into European networks.

Once fully operational, more researchers from the region are invited to join the approved actions.
