UNESCO Publishes Expert Recommendations on Advancing Science Diplomacy in South-East Europe

UNESCO has published a new set of Expert Recommendations for strengthening its role in advancing science diplomacy in South-East Europe, following the Expert Meeting “Shaping the Future through Science Diplomacy”, held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on 18–19 November 2025.

The recommendations build on contributions from experts across policy, research, and international cooperation and focus on the growing importance of science diplomacy in addressing complex regional and global challenges. In the context of South-East Europe, the document highlights the role of science as a bridge between countries, institutions, and societies, supporting trust-building, evidence-informed policymaking, and regional cooperation.

The recommendations outline ways in which UNESCO can further strengthen science-policy interfaces, support cross-border scientific collaboration, and enhance institutional capacities related to science diplomacy in the region. They also underline the relevance of inclusive, knowledge-based approaches in responding to geopolitical tensions, technological change, and societal transformation.

The full set of Expert Recommendations is publicly available via UNESDOC and can be accessed here:
