The Role of Science Diplomacy in Water Supplies

21 March 2025

On 21 March 2025, experts, policymakers, and researchers will gather at the UNESCO Venice Office (Palazzo Zorzi, Castello 4930) to discuss the critical role of science diplomacy in water management. Organised by UNESCO, the University for Continuing Education Krems (UWK), the Central European Initiative (CEI), and the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe (IDM), the event aligns with World Water Day and the launch of the United Nations World Water Development Report.

Water is a vital resource for life, economic stability, and social development, yet challenges such as unequal distribution, climate change, and sustainability demand global cooperation. The event will highlight how science, diplomacy, and artistic perspectives can work together to shape policies and ensure equitable water access worldwide, particularly in the Global South.

  • Presentation of the UN World Water Development Report by Dr. Samuel Partey (UNESCO)
  • Keynote speech by Dr. László Balatonyi (UNESCO Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme)
  • Roundtable discussions featuring leading scientists and policy experts on sustainable water governance

A key outcome will be a white paper with recommendations for strengthening science-policy dialogues and advancing water diplomacy on an international level.

The event will take place in person at UNESCO Venice, with online participation also available.
