Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU started 1 July 2025

From 1 July to 31 December 2025, Denmark will assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union under the motto “A strong Europe in a changing world.” The Danish Presidency will focus on promoting a secure, competitive, and green Europe, while addressing the EU’s role in an increasingly complex global landscape marked by instability, strategic competition, and rising conflict.

A central pillar of the Presidency will be strengthening the EU’s general affairs, particularly its capacity to act decisively, uphold democratic values, and deliver tangible results. Denmark will advocate for a European Union that stands united, protects its own interests, and reinforces the international legal order through concrete action.

Enlargement will also be a priority. Recognising it as a geopolitical imperative, the Danish Presidency will actively promote a merit-based and values-driven enlargement process. Advancing negotiations with Ukraine, Moldova, and the Western Balkans will be a key focus. Enlargement will be closely linked to internal reforms to prepare the EU for future accessions and ensure that new members uphold the Union’s core values of democracy, rule of law, and human rights.

Beyond enlargement, the Danish Presidency will steer early discussions on the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) and advocate for a modern, effective cohesion policy post-2027. Strengthening resilience to crises, simplifying EU legislation, and enhancing cooperation with the UK and other non-EU Western European partners will also be important priorities.

By fostering unity and readiness, the Danish Presidency aims to ensure that the EU remains a strong and reliable actor on the global stage, capable of delivering on today’s challenges and shaping a more secure and sustainable future.

Priorities: A secure Europe and a competitive and green Europe.
