The University of Sarajevo has successfully concluded this year’s edition of the study abroad programme “Comparative Public Health: Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina”, organised in cooperation with Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois) and the University of Belgrade. The long-standing programme provides students with a unique opportunity to explore the intersections of public health, cultural diversity, and socio-political dynamics in the region.
This summer’s programme featured interactive lectures, discussions, and two study visits in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Students explored Sarajevo and Mostar’s rich multicultural heritage and engaged with the Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Centre, where they learned about post-conflict reconciliation and the challenges of addressing the legacy of genocide.
Within the public health component, participants attended lectures on public and mental health, visited primary and secondary health centres, a healthy ageing centre, and mental health organisations. These experiences offered direct insight into the functioning of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s health system, highlighting both its challenges and potential. Encounters with local professionals allowed students to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world practices in a regional context.
