Gathering of Regional Institutes “20 years since the enlargement of the European Union – experiences and challenges”

The Gathering of Regional Institutes “20 years since the enlargement of the European Union – experiences and challenges” was held on 6-7 June 2024 in Hotel Dubrovnik in Zagreb. The event was dedicated to the experiences and challenges of joining and membership in the European Union, two decades since “big-bang” expansions. The two-day meeting was organised and in the atmosphere of the celebration of the 85th anniversary of the Institute of Economics, Zagreb (a partner in the POLICY ANSWERS project).

The first day of the meeting began with an introductory speech by the director of the Institute of Economics, Zagreb, Ph.D. Tajane Barbić. Afterwards, the head of the Representation of the European Commission in Croatia, Zrinka Ujević, gave an introductory presentation on the topic of 20 years since the enlargement of the European Union – experiences and challenges. Her presentation was followed by a short question and answer session moderated by Andrea Čović Vidović, Deputy Head of the Representation.

On the 1st and 2nd panels, colleagues from the European Commission and panelists from regional institutes spoke about the economic effects of EU enlargement and reform challenges on the way to the European Union, including Dr. sc. Zoran Aralica from the Institute of Economics, Zagreb. The moderators were Judita Cuculić Župa, advisor from the Representation of the European Commission in Croatia, and Dr. sc. Jelena Budak from the Institute of Economics, Zagreb.

The second day of the meeting was scheduled for a half-day working meeting of institutes from the region with the aim of exchanging information on current research. The meeting was attended by colleagues from the Central European Labor Studies Institute from Slovakia, the Institute for Economic Research from Slovenia, the Riinvest Institute from Kosovo (another POLICY ANSWERS partner), the Institute of World Economics, the Center for Economic and Regional Studies from Hungary, and The Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies from Austria. and the Institute of Economic Sciences from Serbia.
