The year 2025 marks the 19th anniversary of the establishment of the Western Balkans Steering Platform on Research and Innovation. This Platform holds a pivotal role in fostering, overseeing, and supporting collaboration in research and innovation policies and programmes between the European Union Member States, the European Commission, and the Western Balkans. It serves as a strategic forum for addressing European, multilateral, and regional matters related to research and innovation policy in and with the Western Balkans. Additionally, it functions as a platform for the exchange of information, where recent national developments in the field are shared, discussed, and best practices disseminated.
The Platform convenes annually at Ministerial level with the objective of advancing the integration of the Western Balkans into the European Research Area. These yearly Ministerial meetings provide an opportunity to identify shared priorities, review recent policy developments and reform measures, and determine spin-off initiatives, follow-up actions, and areas for regional cooperation with support from the European Union.
The 2025 annual Ministerial meeting will be held in Podgorica on 20–21 October. This invitation-only event will offer a strategic forum for high-level round table discussions and bilateral meetings with the European Commission, as well as between the Western Balkan economies, further strengthening regional cooperation and integration into the European Research Area.
