The World Bank’s Green Growth in North Macedonia’s Agriculture Sector report highlights the need for North Macedonia to invest in policies that drive sustainable agriculture to combat climate change and environmental risks. Agriculture is crucial to the nation’s economy, comprising 7.6% of GDP, but faces challenges from climate impacts and inefficiencies.
To meet European Green Deal targets, the report recommends aligning policies with green growth goals, such as enhancing climate-smart practices and improving biodiversity. North Macedonia’s current agricultural support policies align with the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), yet more focus is needed on effective design and implementation for a greener trajectory. Immediate actions include fully implementing the 2021-2027 National Agriculture and Rural Development Strategy and, in the longer term, adopting a comprehensive approach to green transition.
